FBI Los Angeles Citizens Academy

Following the FBI Phoenix Office lead the first FBI Los Angeles Citizens Academy class was held in 2001. As of June 2023, there are 1,023 graduates of the FBI Los Angeles Citizens Academy with about 265 members in the FBI Los Angeles Citizens Academy Alumni Association (FBILACAAA), 195 Lifetime members and 70Annual/Senior members.

Each member of the FBI Los Angeles Citizens Academy Association is a graduate of an 8-week FBI Los Angeles Citizens Academy curriculum which focuses on federal law enforcement issues and challenges. Graduates of the curriculum are eligible to participate in the FBI Los Angeles Citizens Academy Alumni Association. That network of alumni meets periodically to update graduates on local and global emerging issues.

Special Agent in Charge Joshua J. Murphy
Mission Services Division

In April 2023, Director Wray named Joshua J. Murphy as the Special Agent in Charge of the Mission Services Division for the Los Angeles Field Office. Mr. Murphy most recently served as an Inspector with the FBI's Inspection Division at FBIHQ.

Mr. Murphy entered duty as a Special Agent in June 2006. He first reported to the New York Field Office, where he investigated People's Republic of China symmetric and asymmetric counterintelligence matters. In 2012, Mr. Murphy promoted to Supervisory Special Agent for the Iran/Iraq Counterintelligence Unit of the FBI's Counterintelligence Division (CD) where he program managed multiple field offices related to Iranian and Iraqi counterintelligence threats. In February 2014, Mr. Murphy promoted to FBI Detailee to the Central Intelligence Agency's Iran Operations Division (CIA-IOD) where he led the FBI's operational liaison, coordination, and de-confliction with CIA-IOD. In May 2015, Mr. Murphy promoted to Unit Chief for the Middle East and Africa Counterintelligence Unit for the CD's Global Section where he led CD's national program management for numerous counterintelligence threats originating from the Middle East and Africa.

In July 2016, Mr. Murphy promoted to Supervisory Special Agent for the Cincinnati Field Office responsible for counterintelligence matters and served as the Counterintelligence Program Coordinator. In 2018, Mr. Murphy led the first ever overseas arrest and extradition of a senior Chinese Intelligence Officer and in 2019 led the overseas arrest of a senior Russian Intelligence Officer.

In November 2019, Mr. Murphy promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge for the Seattle Field Office's Counterterrorism Branch and led Seattle's Counterterrorism, Crisis Management, Applicant/Recruiting, SWAT, and Surveillance (SOG) Programs. In August 2020, Mr. Murphy assumed responsibility for Seattle's National Security Branch and led the Counterintelligence, Cyber, HUMINT, Technical, Surveillance (SSG), Community Outreach, and Private Sector Partnership Programs.

In November 2021, Mr. Murphy promoted to the SES ranks as an Inspector in the FBI Inspection Division. As an Inspector, Mr. Murphy led five Field Office Inspections and numerous Agent Involved Shooting investigations and Strategic Reviews.

In 2015, Mr. Murphy was awarded with the FBI Director's Award and ODNI Intelligence Integration Unit Citation for contributions to the FBI and US Intelligence Community. In 2019, Mr. Murphy was awarded with the ODNI National Counterintelligence and Security Professional Award for Counterintelligence Investigations. In 2020, Mr. Murphy was awarded the ODNI National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation. Preceding his appointment to the FBI, Mr. Murphy served on active duty and reserve duty as a non-commissioned officer and commissioned officer in the US Army's Military Intelligence Branch for over fifteen years. Mr. Murphy served in various leadership positions in the US Army's 25th Infantry Division, 82nd Airborne Division, and New York Army National Guard. Mr. Murphy is native of western New York, graduate of the University at Albany, and is married with two children.
